The Plane

Anytime I hear “The Plane” uttered, I can’t help but think about the 70’s television series, “Fantasy Island.” The character Tattoo would shout, “The Plane” at the beginning of each episode to announce the arrival of a new set of guests. But today “The Plane” has taken on a whole new meaning—an ominous, mysterious meaning. The plane I speak of today is the one that’s being talked about around the world. Where is Malaysia Airlines Flight 370? As I’m sure you know by now, it disappeared five days ago and despite countless search efforts with state of the art technology, we are still clueless as to the whereabouts of it and the 239 people who are on board.

Like me and the talking heads in the media, you probably have your own theories. I’ve bounced around a few ideas, and they’re all bone-chilling. Was the plane hijacked? Perhaps the hijackers have rerouted the plan to a deserted land mass and in a few days the authorities will be contacted and demands will be made. I’m not sure how the families would react to such news. However, knowing their love ones could possibly be alive could provide them with some relative comfort. But if there was a bomb on the plane and it blew up, leaving no physical evidence, or if it crashed due to mechanical failure, then all hope is lost. Since the disappearance, I have been praying for the passengers, their families, and for a miracle! Miracles do happen.

Right before 911, my husband and I took a trip to Senegal West Africa. It was a long plane ride, and I’m glad we went before 911, because since 911, I haven’t been able to get my husband on a plane. Now with the disappearance of Flight 370, I’m not sure when I’ll ever get my husband to accompany me on a long distance flight or short one for that matter. Not only has this recent disappearance made me wary but it also has me wondering what I would have done if I had been a passenger. Would I have been as courageous as the people who were on the planes during 911 or would I have panicked? You never know until you’re in that situation. I just hope and pray the passengers of Flight 370 are still alive and that they have faith in their hearts that people all over the world are praying for their safe return. I want a happy ending to this story that sounds like something straight out of a Stephen King novel. I’m sure some Hollywood producer is already thinking about a screenplay.

Let’s all keep praying and hoping for the best and who knows, one day soon we might look up and be able to say, “The Plane!” and “The Passengers!” Alive and well!
